In recent months, generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity, affecting both the general public and professionals alike. With over 100 million users as of February, ChatGPT has recorded one of the fastest growth rates in Internet history, surpassed only by Threads, Meta's new social network. But how do users actually interact with these tools? Andreessen Horowitz, an investment fund specializing in new technologies, has analyzed SimilarWeb data up to June 2023 to provide some answers.
The most frequently used generative AI tools
Based on global desktop and mobile web visits, Andreessen Horowitz has compiled a list of the world's 50 most-used generative AI tools in June 2023. The top 10 most popular platforms include ChatGPT, character.ai, Google Bard, Poe, QuillBot, PhotoRoom, CivitAI, Midjourney, Hugging Face, and Perplexity. On this list, 80% of the tools were newly developed around generative AI, with only 5 coming from major companies such as Google, Quora, Course Hero, 123RF, and Microsoft.
The domination of ChatGPT
ChatGPT largely dominates the market, capturing 60% of monthly traffic across the entire top 50. Currently ranked as the 24th most-visited site in the world, it remains in competition with giants such as Reddit, LinkedIn and Twitch. However, it has yet to reach the heights of WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram, indicating growth potential for generative AI.
General Assistants in the lead
General assistants" account for 68.7% of the use of generative AI tools, benefiting from the success of ChatGPT. Companions" such as CharacterAI take second place, surpassing content generators (image, voice, video, etc.) such as Midjourney or ElevenLabs.
The Mobile Applications Challenge
An important observation concerns the low use of mobile applications for almost all the tools in the top 50. Only 15 have a mobile version, and most see less than 10% of their monthly traffic coming from their apps rather than the web. Andreessen Horowitz suggests that mobile app development could be a crucial area for progress, given that the average consumer now spends an extra 36 minutes a day on their mobile.
